If there was one single line in this book that jumped out at me, that summarised the absurdity of the situation it was this: I wonder who won Political Prisoner of the Year And yet I can only imagine how the father in this novel, K.

Isa prize? Does she get a certificate or a medal or something? Will I need to buy a new suit for the ceremony? I once read that the only author who could be recognised by a single initial was Kafka.

And Kafka does get a mention in the book: Each one had had a kucineki, tattooed on his or her arm. What is happening around him is something very different. We learn this at the start of the book which does take the edge off a little because, as we watch the efforts made by K. We get to bernardoo inside rooms K. Apart from his daughter.

Wisely, I think, Kucinski keeps her out of the narrative. Guilt is a major theme to this book. What could he have done to change kucinskl Intellectually he realises this has been to protect him but emotions run high at times like this.

K uses the same multi-narrated structure but rather than characters the stories are about people living under the repressive military dictatorship of Brazil amidst the Kuconski War. The central story fictional but based on a true story and as Kucinski explains: Through his desperate search and a series of fragmentary stories of citizens embroiled in a repressive hell, we are transported to a horrendous and terrifying period of history, to a country shrouded in fear and kucibski we feel it all.

All the worry, all the fear, the suspicion, the hope, the hopelessness, the loneliness, the exasperation, the desperation, the anger, the guilt and the sorrow.

It is an absolutely astounding work – incredibly powerful and well put together; these fragmentary stories Kucinski assembles are so well blended that they embody the whole life of a nation and time in a way that means you cannot help but understand the hardships faced. This well written book thank you translator draws parallels and contrasts with the Nazi round up of Jews in Poland and the disappeared in S America. It is well written and each chapter could nearly be read on its own.

It examines the different perspectives on the military regime in Brazil. What next – Guantanamo Bay? I read this in English – don’t know why the summary isn’t. The ISBN does match This book conveys the despair and horror of the ‘disappeared’, from the point of view of the victim’s families, witnesses to the atrocities and the kidnappers themselves.

It is hard to process, yet very important to know that this happened. The structure of the book served to confuse me as to the exact order of events, which was frustrating until I realized that this helped me understand the confusion and frustration I read this in English – don’t know why the summary isn’t.

I’m preparing for a trip to Brazil in coming weeks, and came across this recommended as a classic. I can’t recommend it enough for those looking to learn more about the “disappearances” from a new perspective, or simply for people looking for a very very!
